All choir members are encouraged to write songs. To write a song, a person or a group will reflect upon their inner & outer lives, then organise their musings, so that they become communicative to others. Through songwriting we articulate, explore and express the meaningful events that have shaped or scared our lives. Treating songs as fiction allows members both privacy and freedom to borrow from their own lives. The goal being, not to expose themselves vulnerably, but to find or become aware of truths that they share with their audience, and then articulate them in a useful way.
One of the more
prolific songwriters is Pee Wee, who's been with the choir for four years.
PEE WEE: I used to sing for
years, just sing the same old songs, but I was told to write songs, and I said,
"I'll try and do my first one." I ended up by doing 35 songs, getting
myself up out of a rut, having somewhere to sing and write songs.”
Musicians
Local bands and musicians are giving their time to arrange and record
professional musical backing to the choirs original songs. The choir then sings
over this musical backing in the recording studio.
Hearing their songs played by the bands has been a moving and esteem building
experience for the choir. The musicians also express great feelings of worth from their participation in the charity
CD project, meeting choir members and watching each other perform.
Musicians who have given their time so far include:
